In 2023, more than 1,100 people lost their lives in accidents involving intoxicated drivers, and thousands more suffered injuries. Drunk driving remains a serious problem, putting innocent motorists at risk every day.

Here are some key concerns regarding drunk driving accidents in Texas:

  • Severe Criminal Penalties – Texas imposes harsh penalties on those caught driving under the influence. A first-time DWI offense can result in fines, license suspension, and even jail time.
  • Impaired Judgment & Reaction Time – Alcohol affects coordination, slows reaction time, and impairs judgment, significantly increasing the risk of serious crashes.
  • High Risk of Injury or Fatality – Drunk driving accidents are more likely to result in severe or fatal injuries, as intoxicated drivers often engage in reckless behaviors like speeding or failing to yield.
  • Repeat Offenders – Many intoxicated drivers have previous DWI arrests. Studies show that repeat offenders account for a significant portion of drunk driving accidents in Texas.
  • Liability in Civil Cases – In addition to criminal charges, intoxicated drivers can face civil lawsuits for damages. Victims may seek compensation for medical bills, lost income, and pain and suffering.
