Truck Accidents in Texas
Truck accidents are a serious concern across Texas. With one of the highest concentrations of commercial vehicles in the nation, the state regularly sees collisions involving 18-wheelers on its major highways and rural roads alike. In 2023 alone, the Texas Department of Transportation recorded thousands of truck crashes, many of which resulted in life-changing injuries or fatalities.
Understanding the common causes of truck crashes can help you protect yourself and your loved ones.
Here are some of the most common reasons these incidents happen on Texas roads:
- Driver Fatigue: Truck drivers often face long hours behind the wheel, and fatigue can impair their reaction time and decision-making. Despite regulations limiting driving hours, fatigue remains a contributing factor in many serious accidents. Tired drivers are less likely to react quickly or remain attentive to road conditions.
- Improperly Secured Cargo: A load that is not properly secured can shift during transit, affecting the truck’s stability and control. In some cases, cargo may spill onto the roadway, creating hazards for other motorists. Trucking companies must ensure loads are balanced and secured to prevent dangerous outcomes.
- Mechanical Failures: Brake failures, tire blowouts, and engine problems are all common mechanical issues that can lead to accidents. Regular maintenance and thorough inspections are vital, but sometimes oversight or shortcuts lead to catastrophic outcomes.
- Blind Spots and Wide Turns: Due to their size, trucks have significant blind spots and require a wider radius to turn. Passenger vehicles in the path of a turning truck or in a blind zone are at increased risk of being hit, especially at intersections or highway exits.
- Speeding and Reckless Driving: Even slight speeding in a large truck can have magnified consequences. When truck drivers disregard speed limits or fail to adjust for weather or traffic, the results can be deadly.
