Vidor, TX (January 17, 2025) – A collision between a Vidor Independent School District school bus and a pickup truck early Friday morning, January 17, left two individuals injured. The accident occurred on FM 105, in the 7700 block of North Main St., just inside Jasper County.
Authorities say the crash happened around 6:20 a.m. According to preliminary reports from the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), a pickup truck with heavy front-end damage appears to have rear-ended the school bus in the southbound lanes. Thankfully, none of the students on board or the school bus driver suffered any injuries. Another bus was dispatched to the scene to transport the students to their school.
The driver and a passenger in the pickup truck were injured and transported by ambulance to a hospital in Southeast Texas for treatment of injuries. Officials with the DPS are continuing their investigation to determine the cause of the crash.
We hope those injured in this accident recover quickly.
School Bus Accidents in Texas
In Texas, school bus accidents involving passenger vehicles occur more often than many realize. According to state data, several hundred school bus-related accidents are reported each year, often resulting in injuries to drivers and passengers of other vehicles. While school buses are designed to protect students, collisions can lead to severe injuries for those in smaller vehicles.
Understanding the risks surrounding such accidents is important. Below are some key considerations:
- Driver Fatigue or Distraction – Fatigue and distractions are common causes of rear-end collisions like this one. Sleep-deprived drivers or those using mobile devices are far more likely to cause accidents.
- Road Conditions – Early-morning accidents can occur when drivers fail to adjust to wet or foggy roads, especially in rural or less-maintained areas. Poor visibility can make it harder to see school buses, which often stop frequently.
- Speeding – Exceeding speed limits, particularly in school zones or near stopped buses, significantly increases crash risks. Drivers must be extra vigilant during school commuting hours.
- Failure to Maintain Safe Distance – Rear-end crashes often happen when drivers don’t leave enough space between their vehicles and others. Texas law requires vehicles to maintain a reasonable following distance at all times.
Victims injured in accidents caused by negligence should consider legal assistance to help protect their rights.
