Car Accidents in Texas
Texas reports some of the highest car crash numbers in the country each year, with collisions occurring on urban streets, rural roads, and state highways. In 2023, more than 244,000 people were injured in traffic-related incidents statewide. These crashes often lead to physical injuries, emotional stress, and financial challenges for those involved.
When it comes to understanding crash risks, distracted driving continues to be a major concern across the state:
- Cell Phone Use: Texting or calling while driving diverts attention away from the road. Even a moment of distraction can result in a serious crash. Despite awareness campaigns, it remains one of the most common causes of wrecks.
- GPS and Navigation Devices: Many drivers glance down at screens to follow directions, taking their eyes off the road for crucial seconds. This type of distraction is often underestimated but can be just as dangerous.
- Passengers in the Vehicle: Conversations, children, or pets can take a driver’s focus off their surroundings. These distractions are often overlooked, but they increase the chances of an error in judgment.
- Eating or Drinking: Consuming food or beverages while driving can interfere with the ability to steer properly and react quickly. Spills or dropped items can also trigger sudden movements.
- Multitasking Behaviors: Adjusting the radio, checking a mirror, or looking at items in the car can all add up to dangerous distractions. Staying focused on the road is critical to reducing risk.
