Texarkana, TX (April 2, 2025) – A man is fighting for his life following a hit-and-run that occurred Sunday evening in Texarkana. Authorities are actively searching for the driver responsible for the collision.
The incident happened on April 1 near the intersection of W. 25th Street and Hazel Street, in a church parking lot. Around 6 p.m., the victim was reportedly walking across the lot when a vehicle struck him. Instead of stopping, the driver fled the scene, leaving the man severely injured and alone. Despite his critical injuries, the man managed to drag himself to Highland Park Elementary, nearly a half mile away. He wasn’t discovered until 6 a.m. Monday, when a school staff member found him and immediately called for help. He was transported to Christus St. Michael Hospital, where he remains in critical condition following surgery. Texarkana Police Public Information Officer Shawn Vaughn confirmed the department has identified the victim, though they are still searching for the driver and vehicle involved. The investigation is ongoing, and police are urging anyone with information to come forward.
We hope the man injured in this tragic hit-and-run recovers fully and quickly.
Pedestrian Accidents in Texas
Texas consistently ranks among the top states for pedestrian-related injuries and fatalities. According to the Texas Department of Transportation, over 5,700 pedestrian crashes were reported in a recent year, with more than 800 resulting in serious injuries. High-speed roads, limited lighting, and driver inattention often contribute to these heartbreaking incidents.
Pedestrian-related crashes leave lasting impacts. Here are a few key factors that commonly lead to such accidents:
- Failure to Yield: Drivers are legally required to yield the right of way to pedestrians in crosswalks and intersections. When they fail to do so—either due to distraction or recklessness—it often results in serious harm to those on foot.
- Speeding: Higher speeds reduce a driver’s reaction time and increase the severity of injuries in any collision. Pedestrians have little protection against a moving vehicle, making even low-speed crashes dangerous.
- Distracted Driving: Texting, using a GPS, or simply not paying attention while behind the wheel can easily result in a pedestrian being overlooked. These preventable oversights have devastating consequences.
- Poor Visibility and Lighting: Accidents often occur at night or in poorly lit areas, where drivers may not see pedestrians in time. Even well-lit urban areas can become hazardous if visibility is compromised.
- Alcohol or Drug Use: Impairment on the part of the driver—or the pedestrian—can drastically raise the likelihood of an accident. Reaction times are slower, and judgment is impaired, creating a dangerous mix.
