Longview, TX (March 24, 2025) – An automobile accident was reported on Saturday afternoon in Longview that involved a motorcycle and a van. The incident sent one person to the hospital. The accident occurred on March 22 around 12:45 p.m. in the 3000 block of Gilmer Road, according to local authorities.
Investigators say the driver of a white van was attempting to make a left turn into traffic when it pulled into the path of a northbound motorcycle. The bike collided with the van, and the force of the crash resulted in significant injuries to the motorcyclist. Emergency medical personnel responded swiftly and transported the injured rider to a nearby hospital for treatment. The exact extent of the motorcyclist’s injuries has not been publicly disclosed at this time. The driver of the van remained at the scene and cooperated with law enforcement. No injuries were reported for the van driver. Police temporarily slowed traffic in the northbound lanes of Gilmer Rd as they cleared the area and began their investigation. By 2:30 p.m., congestion continued in the area as crews worked to wrap up.
We hope the injured motorcyclist experiences a full and quick recovery.
Motorcycle Accidents in Texas
Texas sees a high number of motorcycle crashes each year. According to the Texas Department of Transportation, over 8,000 motorcycle-related crashes occurred across the state in 2023. These accidents often result in severe injuries due to the exposed nature of motorcycles. In East Texas, particularly, major highways and suburban roads see a notable portion of these incidents.
Motorcycle accidents can be life-altering. Here are several common injuries victims may face after a collision:
-
Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBIs): Even with a helmet, motorcyclists are at high risk of head trauma. A strong blow to the head can cause long-term cognitive challenges, memory loss, or emotional changes. Recovery is often extensive and requires ongoing care.
-
Spinal Cord Damage: The impact of a crash can damage the vertebrae or spinal cord. These injuries may lead to partial or complete paralysis, drastically changing a victim’s lifestyle and independence.
-
Road Rash and Soft Tissue Injuries: When riders are thrown from a bike, their skin can be scraped or torn by the road. Road rash can lead to deep wounds, infections, and nerve damage, especially if protective gear is lacking.
-
Fractures and Broken Bones: Motorcycle crashes frequently result in broken limbs or ribs. Surgery and rehabilitation may be required, and in some cases, these injuries can result in long-term disability or pain.
-
Internal Injuries: Blunt-force trauma from a crash may cause damage to internal organs. These injuries often require emergency surgery and can be life-threatening if not treated quickly.
