Car Accidents in Texas
Texas drivers face one of the busiest and most dangerous traffic environments in the country. With millions of registered vehicles on Texas roads, even minor crashes are a daily occurrence. According to the Texas Department of Transportation, a reportable crash happens about every 57 seconds across the state, making roadway safety a constant concern for drivers.
While every crash is different, let’s take a moment to talk about some of the most common causes of car accidents in Texas:
- Distracted Driving: Distractions—whether it’s a phone, food, or in-car navigation—are a leading cause of wrecks in Texas. Drivers who take their eyes off the road, even for a few seconds, risk colliding with other vehicles, cyclists, or pedestrians. Staying alert is one of the best ways to prevent unnecessary crashes.
- Speeding: When drivers exceed speed limits or fail to adjust for road or weather conditions, they lose the ability to respond quickly. Speeding increases both the likelihood of a crash and the severity of injuries that result from it. Slowing down can save lives.
- Failure to Yield: Many accidents occur when drivers ignore traffic signs or fail to yield when turning. These types of crashes frequently happen at intersections and often lead to sideswipe or T-bone collisions.
- Following Too Closely: Tailgating is dangerous, especially during heavy traffic. A sudden stop can lead to a rear-end crash, often resulting in neck and back injuries. Keeping a safe following distance helps avoid this common issue.
- Weather Conditions: Rain, fog, or icy roads reduce visibility and traction. Drivers who fail to adjust their speed or leave enough space between vehicles increase their risk of losing control or hitting others.
If you’ve been in a crash, even a minor one, it’s still important to speak with a car accident attorney. Injuries and property damage don’t always show their full impact right away. By contacting an attorney early, you can get help collecting evidence, documenting your losses, and ensuring the insurance company takes your claim seriously. Don’t assume a “minor” wreck means you’re on your own—it could cost you down the road.
