Car Accidents in Texas
Car accidents are a leading cause of injury and fatality in Texas, with thousands of crashes occurring each year. Many of these accidents occur at intersections and highways, where high speeds and heavy traffic increase the risk of serious crashes.
Some of the common causes of these and other major accidents:
- Intersection Collisions – Intersections, particularly those on high-speed roads, are frequent sites for severe crashes. Drivers failing to yield, running red lights, or misjudging oncoming traffic can cause devastating wrecks. These types of accidents often involve side-impact collisions, which can be particularly dangerous.
- Failure to Adjust to Road Conditions – Rain, fog, and ice can make roads treacherous, requiring drivers to adjust their speed and braking distance. Failing to do so can lead to loss of control and serious accidents. Many weather-related crashes occur because drivers underestimate the impact of slick roads.
- Distracted Driving – Texting, adjusting in-car controls, and eating while driving all contribute to preventable accidents. Even a few seconds of inattention can lead to a life-changing crash. Many states, including Oklahoma, have enacted laws to limit cellphone use behind the wheel.
- Speeding and Reckless Driving – Excessive speed reduces reaction time and increases the severity of crashes. Aggressive driving behaviors, such as tailgating and weaving between lanes, make it harder to avoid sudden hazards. Speed-related crashes are more likely to result in catastrophic injuries.
- Drowsy Driving – Fatigued drivers exhibit slowed reaction times and impaired judgment, similar to those driving under the influence. Long commutes and overnight driving increase the likelihood of drowsy driving crashes.
