Car Accidents in Texas
Every year in Texas, thousands of people are hurt in motor vehicle accidents on rural roads and city highways alike. The Texas Department of Transportation reports that in 2023, one person was injured every 2 minutes and 9 seconds in a crash across the state. With so many lives impacted, it’s vital to understand the risks and realities of Texas roadways.
There are a number of common factors that can contribute to crashes in Texas. Here are a few important ones to keep in mind:
- Fatigued Driving: Drivers who get behind the wheel while tired are at greater risk of falling asleep or making dangerous mistakes. Drowsiness reduces reaction time and awareness, which increases the chances of rear-end crashes or failing to notice stop signs and signals.
- Distracted Driving: Whether it’s texting, checking GPS, or eating while driving, distractions are a major contributor to vehicle accidents. Inattentive drivers can drift out of their lanes or fail to notice slowing traffic ahead.
- Unfamiliar Rural Roads: Many accidents in East Texas occur on narrow, winding rural roads. Drivers unfamiliar with the terrain may misjudge curves or have trouble navigating during low-light conditions.
- Failure to Yield: A high number of accidents happen when drivers fail to yield at intersections or when merging onto highways. These types of crashes often result in T-bone or side-impact collisions, which can cause serious injuries.
- Speeding: Excessive speed reduces the driver’s ability to steer safely around curves or objects in the roadway. Speed also increases the severity of injuries in the event of a crash.
