Car Accidents in Texas
Each year, thousands of Texans are affected by serious vehicle accidents. According to the Texas Department of Transportation, more than 4,000 people lost their lives in motor vehicle accidents across the state in 2023 alone. With roadways growing increasingly busy, accidents involving motorcycles, trucks, and cars continue to result in injuries and fatalities statewide.
Here’s a closer look at a few factors that help explain why injury crashes occur on Texas roads:
- Inattentive Driving: Distractions like cell phone use, eating, or even adjusting the radio often pull drivers’ eyes off the road. These small moments of inattention can quickly lead to major consequences, especially on fast-moving rural highways.
- Failure to Yield: Misjudging the speed or distance of oncoming traffic contributes to many intersection crashes. Motorists sometimes rush left-hand turns or pull into traffic without ensuring a clear path, particularly near rural junctions.
- Unsafe Lane Changes: Changing lanes without using signals or checking blind spots is another leading cause of accidents. This can be especially dangerous when motorcycles are involved, as riders may not be seen in time.
- Roadway Conditions: Uneven pavement, faded markings, or poorly designed intersections can confuse drivers or increase the chances of losing control, particularly at higher speeds.
