Pedestrian Accidents in Texas
Pedestrian fatalities remain a tragic and ongoing issue across Texas. In 2024, the Texas Department of Transportation reported more than 5,000 pedestrian crashes, with over 830 resulting in death. These numbers highlight the dangers pedestrians face, especially during early morning or nighttime hours.
Understanding why these incidents happen is vital to prevention. Here are key contributing factors that can lead to pedestrian-involved crashes.
- Low Visibility: Many pedestrian crashes occur during early morning or evening hours when visibility is reduced. Drivers may struggle to see people on or near the roadway, particularly in areas without adequate lighting.
- Dark Clothing: Pedestrians wearing dark or non-reflective clothing are less likely to be seen by drivers, especially in rural areas with limited street lighting.
- Driver Inattention: Even a brief moment of distraction can result in a driver failing to notice a pedestrian. Texting, adjusting the radio, or reaching for objects are common causes.
- Speeding: Higher speeds give drivers less time to react and increase the severity of injuries when a collision occurs.
- Unmarked Crossings: In rural or low-traffic areas, pedestrians often cross without designated crosswalks, making it harder for drivers to anticipate their presence.
- Lack of Sidewalks: In many rural parts of Texas, sidewalks are unavailable, forcing pedestrians to walk along roadways and increasing their risk of being struck.
If you or someone close to you has been affected by a pedestrian accident, it’s important to speak with a knowledgeable wrongful death attorney. Early legal action can help preserve evidence and ensure your rights are protected through a difficult process. These cases often require thorough investigation and timely filing to pursue justice and compensation for surviving families.
