Vidor, TX (January 26, 2025) – A tragic motorcycle accident late Friday night left one person dead in Orange County.
The Texas Department of Public Safety reports that the collision occurred at approximately 10:15 p.m. on January 24 when a northbound 2008 Kawasaki motorcycle collided with a GMC pickup truck traveling south on Farm to Market Road 105 near Ponderosa Street. The rider, identified as Sheldon Withrow of Lumberton, was pronounced dead at the scene by Orange County Precinct Three Justice of the Peace Joy Dubose-Simonton. Preliminary investigations suggest the collision happened as the vehicles approached each other in opposite directions, though the exact circumstances are still under review. Authorities have not released further details about the incident as the investigation continues.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Sheldon Withrow.
Motorcycle Accidents in Texas
Motorcycle accidents in Texas result in thousands of injuries and hundreds of fatalities each year. Due to their limited protection, motorcyclists are more likely to suffer severe or fatal injuries during collisions. According to data from the Texas Department of Transportation, motorcyclists accounted for 12% of all traffic-related fatalities in the state last year.
When accidents occur, there are several key factors often under review:
- Visibility Issues: Motorcycles are smaller and harder to see, which can lead to drivers failing to yield or notice their presence.
- Impairment: Alcohol or drug use can significantly impair reaction times and judgment, increasing the risk of a collision.
- Speeding and Reckless Driving: High speeds can exacerbate the severity of injuries sustained in motorcycle crashes.
- Left-Hand Turns: A significant number of motorcycle accidents occur when other vehicles make left-hand turns into their path.
Victims and families impacted by motorcycle crashes face devastating consequences, from physical injuries to financial losses.
