Newton Co., TX (January 26, 2025) – A Memorial Villages Police Department officer sustained life-threatening injuries in a collision with a pickup truck on State Highway 62 near County Road 3147 in Newton County. The crash occurred just after 1 p.m. on Friday, January 24, as the officer escorted a wide load with emergency lights and sirens activated.
According to initial reports from the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), two motorcycle officers were managing traffic while traveling southbound in the northbound lanes to provide clearance for the wide load. During this operation, a Toyota pickup truck traveling northbound collided head-on with one of the motorcycle officers.
The injured officer was airlifted to St. Elizabeth Hospital for emergency treatment, where hospital staff reported the officer remains in critical condition and is undergoing surgery. The driver of the pickup truck, who was transported by ground ambulance, reportedly did not sustain injuries. State Highway 62 remains closed in both directions while authorities investigate the incident. DPS officials are working to determine the sequence of events leading to the crash, while Memorial Villages Police Department has confirmed the injured officer’s employment with the agency.
