Car Accidents in Texas
Texas sees a high volume of motor vehicle accidents each year. According to the Texas Department of Transportation, thousands of crashes occur on rural roads, contributing to serious injuries and fatalities. In 2023, Texas recorded more than 15,000 serious injury crashes, emphasizing the risks on both highways and smaller county roads.
Understanding how crashes happen can help prevent them. Below are common factors that contribute to car accidents in Texas:
- Failure to Yield: Many crashes occur at intersections due to drivers failing to yield the right of way. This is particularly common at rural crossings, where traffic signs may be less visible.
- Distracted Driving: Texting, talking on the phone, and other distractions increase the risk of collisions. Even a few seconds of inattention can lead to a crash.
- Speeding: Driving above the posted speed limit, especially on county roads, can make it harder for drivers to react in time to avoid a collision.
- Weather Conditions: Rain, fog, and other weather-related hazards reduce visibility and road traction, increasing the risk of accidents.
- Driver Fatigue: Long hours behind the wheel, particularly for those commuting long distances, can lead to slower reaction times and a higher risk of crashes.
