Smith Co., TX (August 15, 2024) – The Texas Department of Public Safety confirmed that 58-year-old Maria Hernandez lost her life as a result of a fatal accident that occurred early Wednesday morning, August 14.
At around 1220 a.m., 22-year-old Cesar Efrain Viramontes-Cocolon was driving a pickup truck westbound on Highway 31. At the same time, an SUV was traveling eastbound on the roadway. As the vehicles proceeded through the area near Farm to Market Road 2908, they collided. An 18-wheeler traveling on the road attempted to avoid the collision but was unable to. As a result, the truck collided with the SUV. The driver of the SUV, who was later identified as Hernandez, was fatally injured in the accident. Authorities later determined that Viramontes-Cocolon was under the influence at the time of the accident. He was subsequently taken into police custody, where he is facing charges. At this time, the incident is being investigated.
