Wrong-Way Accidents in Texas
Wrong-way accidents are among the most dangerous crashes on Texas roads, often leading to severe injuries or fatalities. According to state data, hundreds of these collisions occur annually, with many involving intoxicated or distracted drivers. Head-on impacts at high speeds significantly reduce a driver’s chance of survival.
Several key factors contribute to wrong-way crashes, including:
- Impaired Driving – Many wrong-way collisions involve drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs, which can impair judgment and lead to confusion on the road.
- Poor Signage or Road Design – Missing or unclear signs, especially at night, can cause drivers to enter highways in the wrong direction.
- Driver Fatigue – Drowsy drivers may become disoriented and mistakenly enter highways against traffic flow.
- Medical Emergencies – Sudden health conditions, such as seizures or strokes, can cause drivers to lose control and enter opposing lanes.
- Reckless or Distracted Driving – Some drivers unintentionally enter the wrong lanes due to distractions like cell phone use or GPS misinterpretation.
