Truck Accidents in Texas
The latest data from the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) reveals the significant risks posed by truck accidents in the state, with as many as 26,164 truck accidents occurring annually. These accidents often result in severe injuries and fatalities, highlighting the dangers that large commercial vehicles present on Texas roads.
Several parties can be held liable for these truck crashes, depending on the circumstances of the accident. The truck driver is often the first to be scrutinized, especially if reckless driving, fatigue, or substance use is involved. However, liability can also extend to the trucking company, particularly if they failed to maintain the vehicle properly, did not follow safety regulations, or pressured the driver to meet unrealistic deadlines. Additionally, cargo loaders can be held responsible if improperly loaded or secured cargo contributed to the accident. In some cases, manufacturers of truck parts may be liable if a defect caused the crash.
Common causes of truck accidents in Texas include driver fatigue, which is a significant risk factor due to long hours on the road. Distracted driving, such as using a mobile phone while operating the truck, is another frequent cause. Speeding or driving too fast for road conditions is particularly dangerous with large vehicles. Improper maintenance of the truck, such as brake failures or tire blowouts, can also lead to serious accidents.
