Bicycle Accidents in Texas
Bicycle accidents in Texas are a common occurrence, especially with the state’s growing number of cyclists sharing the roads with motor vehicles. These accidents can lead to severe injuries due to the lack of protection that bicycles offer compared to cars. Some of the most common injuries cyclists experience include broken bones, head injuries, spinal cord injuries, and road rash. Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) are particularly concerning, as they can lead to long-term complications, especially if the cyclist isn’t wearing a helmet.
Several factors contribute to bicycle accidents in Texas. Distracted driving is one of the most common causes, with motorists often failing to notice cyclists until it’s too late. Additionally, failure to yield the right of way, especially at intersections, is another leading cause. Poor road conditions, such as potholes or debris, can also cause cyclists to lose control, leading to serious accidents. In some cases, drivers may open car doors without checking for oncoming cyclists, a situation referred to as “dooring,” which can lead to devastating injuries for the cyclist.
