Carthage, TX (August 7, 2025) – A man was airlifted for emergency care after he was struck by a vehicle while running across a roadway in Carthage on Wednesday afternoon, August 6.
The incident unfolded around 4:45 p.m. when the Panola County Sheriff’s Office responded to calls about an 18-wheeler reportedly driving recklessly on Highway 59 South while towing military equipment. A deputy located the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop along the Loop near Spring Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.
During the course of the traffic stop, an unrelated man ran across the Loop and was hit by a separate passing vehicle. Emergency medical personnel responded immediately and transported the pedestrian via EMS Air 1 to receive advanced medical treatment. No further details about his condition have been made public.
Authorities temporarily closed the roadway during the investigation and medical response but have since reopened the Loop to normal traffic. The Carthage Police Department is leading the investigation into the pedestrian crash. The driver involved in the impact remained at the scene, and officials have not reported any citations or charges at this time.
We hope the injured pedestrian recovers quickly.
Pedestrian Accidents in Texas
Texas consistently ranks among the highest states for pedestrian-involved crashes. In 2024, state transportation officials recorded more than 5,000 pedestrian crashes, over 800 of which resulted in death. Many of these incidents occur in areas with high traffic flow, where people unexpectedly enter the roadway.
Pedestrian injuries are often severe and life-altering. Below are some common consequences victims may face following such accidents.
- Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI): Pedestrians hit by vehicles often suffer head trauma. TBIs can impact memory, balance, and behavior, sometimes requiring lifelong care.
- Pelvic and Leg Fractures: The impact from a vehicle can cause multiple fractures, particularly to the lower body. Recovery often involves surgery and extended rehabilitation.
- Spinal Cord Damage: Collisions may result in spinal injuries that lead to chronic pain or, in severe cases, permanent paralysis.
- Internal Bleeding: The blunt force trauma of a crash can cause damage to organs and internal systems. These injuries may not be visible but can be deadly if not treated quickly.
- Emotional Trauma: Beyond physical harm, victims often suffer anxiety, depression, or PTSD. Mental health support is crucial to full recovery.
- Long-Term Mobility Issues: Some victims face a lifetime of mobility challenges, requiring assistive devices or home modifications to regain independence.
