Tyler, TX (December 19, 2024) – A multi-vehicle collision in Tyler claimed the lives of two individuals and left two others injured Tuesday afternoon, December 17.
According to the Tyler Police Department, the crash occurred in the 200 block of SSW Loop 323, between Front St. and W. Elm St., at approximately 2:30 p.m. Reports indicate that a GMC SUV, driven by 82-year-old William Connerly, was traveling on West Elm Street and attempting to turn north onto the SSW Loop when it was struck by a semi-truck.
The impact of the collision pushed both the SUV and the semi-truck into the northbound lanes, where three additional vehicles in the turn lane were hit. William Connerly and his passenger, 79-year-old Shirley Connerly, were pronounced dead at the scene. The couple is a resident of Kerens, TX. The semi-truck driver and one of the drivers from the vehicles in the turn lane were transported to a nearby hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening. Investigators are still working to determine the cause of the crash.
We hope the injured victims recover quickly.
Our thoughts go out to the families of William and Shirley Connerly.
Fatal Auto Accidents in Texas
Accidents involving semi-trucks and large commercial vehicles often have significant consequences for those involved. Unfortunately, many of these accidents are fatal. In many cases, truck accidents are completely preventable. Some of the most common causes include:
- Driver Fatigue: Truck drivers often face grueling schedules, leading to exhaustion and impaired reaction times. Fatigued driving can significantly increase the risk of catastrophic accidents.
- Speeding: Large trucks require more time and distance to stop, making speeding a deadly factor. Excessive speed reduces a driver’s ability to control their vehicle, especially in emergencies.
- Distracted Driving: Using a phone, eating, or adjusting the GPS while driving diverts attention from the road. This dangerous behavior is especially perilous in heavy trucks.
- Poor Vehicle Maintenance: Neglected maintenance, such as faulty brakes or worn tires, can lead to mechanical failures. These issues often result in collisions that could have been prevented.
- Improper Loading: Overloaded or improperly balanced cargo can cause trucks to tip or lose control. This is a common yet avoidable cause of fatal accidents.
