Nacogdoches, TX (February 16, 2025) – A Thursday night crash in Nacogdoches claimed the life of a motorcyclist and left another driver injured.
The Nacogdoches Police Department responded to the accident at around 8 p.m. on February 13 at the intersection of Loop 224 and Highway 7 East. Authorities say 45-year-old Shawn Pritchard of Nacogdoches was riding his motorcycle northbound on the Loop when an SUV, driven by 18-year-old Araceli Esparza of Katy, turned left in front of him. The motorcycle struck the SUV, and Pritchard was thrown from his bike.
Emergency responders transported Pritchard to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. Esparza sustained minor injuries and was treated at a nearby medical center. The crash remains under investigation.
Our thoughts are with the loved ones of Shawn Pritchard during this difficult time, and we hope for a full recovery for Araceli Esparza.
Motorcycle Accidents in Texas
Motorcyclists face significant risks on Texas roads, with many crashes resulting in severe injuries or fatalities. The Texas Department of Transportation reports that more than 500 motorcyclists die each year in the state, with left-turn accidents being a leading cause of fatal crashes. These collisions often occur when drivers fail to yield to an oncoming motorcycle.
Several factors contribute to motorcycle crashes:
- Failure to Yield – Many motorcycle accidents happen when drivers misjudge a rider’s speed or fail to notice them at intersections. Left-turn crashes, like the one in this case, are among the most common causes of fatal motorcycle accidents.
- Lack of Visibility – Motorcycles are smaller and can be harder to see in heavy traffic. Drivers who are not paying full attention may not notice a motorcycle approaching.
- Severe Impact on Riders – Unlike car occupants, motorcyclists do not have seat belts, airbags, or a protective metal frame. This makes collisions particularly dangerous, increasing the likelihood of serious or fatal injuries.
- Roadway Conditions – Poor road surfaces, debris, and sudden stops can be dangerous for motorcyclists, especially at higher speeds. A hazard that might be minor for a car can cause a motorcyclist to lose control.
