Fannin County, TX (February 2, 2025) – A two-vehicle crash at the intersection of State Highway 121 and FM 1629 claimed two lives and left a teenager seriously injured on Saturday, February 1.
According to initial reports, 63-year-old Joe Miller was driving a GMC Sierra when he failed to yield at the intersection. As a result, a 16-year-old driver in a Dodge Ram collided with Miller’s vehicle. Miller died at the scene, while his passenger, Jackie Dewoody, was rushed to a nearby hospital. Despite efforts to save her, she later succumbed to her injuries. The teenage driver sustained severe injuries and was airlifted to a hospital in Plano for emergency care. Authorities continue to investigate the crash to determine all contributing factors.
We extend our deepest condolences to the families of Joe Miller and Jackie Dewoody. We also hope for a full recovery for the injured teenager.
Fatal Car Accidents in Texas
Texas roadways see thousands of fatal crashes each year, with many occurring at rural intersections like State Highway 121 and FM 1629. Data from the Texas Department of Transportation shows that failure to yield is one of the leading causes of intersection-related accidents, often resulting in severe or fatal injuries.
Here are some common factors that contribute to deadly collisions:
- Failure to Yield – Many crashes happen when drivers misjudge right-of-way rules or fail to notice oncoming traffic at intersections, increasing the risk of side-impact and T-bone crashes.
- Speeding – Higher speeds reduce reaction time and increase the force of impact, making serious injuries and fatalities more likely.
- Distracted Driving – Drivers who are texting, eating, or adjusting their GPS may miss critical traffic signals or fail to recognize crossing vehicles.
- Limited Visibility – Poor lighting, obstructed views, and adverse weather conditions can make it harder for drivers to see stop signs or oncoming traffic.
- Driver Inexperience – Younger drivers, like the 16-year-old in this crash, may lack the experience needed to react to sudden hazards on the road.
