Hit and Run Accidents in Texas
Texas has seen a troubling increase in hit-and-run accidents over the past decade. Many of these involve pedestrians, bicyclists, and children, who are most vulnerable to serious injury. According to TxDOT, nearly one in five pedestrian fatalities involves a driver who fled the scene.
Understanding the legal and emotional aftermath of these crashes is essential. Here are some key facts:
-
Hit-and-Runs Often Involve Vulnerable Victims: Children, the elderly, and pedestrians are frequently the victims of hit-and-run crashes. These groups have little protection, and when a driver flees, it leaves them without immediate help. The delay in emergency care can turn a survivable injury into something far worse.
-
Leaving the Scene Is a Felony in Many Cases: In Texas, if a person is seriously hurt or killed and the driver responsible fails to stop and render aid, the charge is elevated to a felony. This reflects how seriously the law views such actions, especially when victims are left without assistance.
-
Victims’ Families Often Struggle with Medical Costs: When a child or loved one is injured in a hit-and-run, the financial burden can be overwhelming. Emergency care, surgeries, and ongoing treatment may not be covered if the driver isn’t insured or initially unidentified. An attorney can help locate sources of compensation and build a strong claim.
-
Finding the Driver Isn’t Always Immediate: Even with technology and community tips, identifying hit-and-run suspects takes time. This can delay justice and frustrate families. Once the driver is caught, the legal process often begins with securing evidence and proving the connection between the person and the vehicle involved.
If your child has been injured in a hit-and-run crash, it’s crucial to speak with a pedestrian accident attorney as soon as possible. These cases involve complex legal issues and often require extensive investigation. An attorney can help protect your child’s rights, coordinate with law enforcement, and pursue compensation for medical bills and trauma.
