Brookston, TX (September 29, 2024) – An 11-year-old child was severely hurt and airlifted to a hospital after being hit by a car shortly before 7:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 26. The crash took place while Chisum Independent School District school bus was stopped on Highway 82, east of Farm to Market Road 38, with its red lights flashing and stop sign extended.
A passing car did not stop and hit the child while they were boarding the bus. The driver, 28-year-old Alexis Velazquez, was arrested by a State Trooper and charged with failing to stop for a school bus, resulting in serious bodily injury. He also faces charges for driving with an invalid license and without insurance, both of which contributed to the incident. Velazquez remains in custody at the Lamar County Jail as the Texas Department of Public Safety continues its investigation.
We hope the injured child recovers quickly.
Auto Accidents in Texas
In Texas, pedestrian accidents result in more than 7,500 injuries every year. Many victims suffer from broken bones, but more severe injuries, such as traumatic brain injuries (TBIs), are also common. These life-changing injuries can affect a person’s health and well-being for years, often requiring long-term medical treatment, rehabilitation, and emotional support. The financial burden from medical bills, therapy costs, and lost income during recovery can be overwhelming.
In addition to the physical challenges, the emotional impact of these accidents can be significant. Victims may experience anxiety, depression, and a lower quality of life as they adjust to their new circumstances. The families of those injured may also face significant stress as they provide care and support for their loved ones through the recovery process.
